W-Sitting | ADHD Information

This also is  a sign of haveing spd also. I see lots of kids in our school like this which makes me think how many undiagnosed kids there are. My dad has spoken with professional who work with Se kids. They tell them 70% of kids in public education need special materials for them or need a different teaching method. That leaves the 30% this type of education is right for. I see that number is kids who are Visual/auditory learners. That is low. I see that then that education  be changed to fit the more 70 %. Any ideas.

I'm new to this stuff. What does spd and Se mean?My son who is has ADHD enjoys sitting in the W-position.  Is this common with ADHD children?

What is the W-position?

SPD is Sensory Processing Disorder.  SE is special education.

My ADHD son never sat in the W-position.  I don't believe it is common (or uncommon) for ADHD children.  I don't think it has anything to do with ADHD.

The  W-position is more prominent in children who have autism because they have a hard time controlling thier musclesI hate to sound ignorant but I really am not sure what the W-position is.  Can you explain? My son sat  in a W position for  awhile they said because of low muscle tone but he does not have that at all. I just remind him to sit properly which means cross your legs. He likes to sit in a w because he can reach things in front of him easier or get closer to the tv.  We also use a bumpy cushion that is on a bit of an angle to sit on i got it from an occupational therapist. It also helps him stay at circle time at school. I also used a carpet sample square and told him he had to sit properly on it like it was a big treat.  I dont know if it is common for kids with ADHD but it isnt good for them to sit like that . If it worrys you try go seeing an occupational therapist they have different exercises and stuff that can teach our different learning children how to do things.

Kid sits on the floor with legs (bent at knees) facing backwards (like a W). Hope I explained that well enough!

SmallMom38755.7790856482I don't know if it is common or not among kids with ADHD but I do know that a PT would screem if he/she saw a kids sitting like that.  In the school that I taught the PT was always after kids who were W sitting...she would even get after the teachers if the student were w sitting.....I agree with smallmom. My daughter sat like that when she was young and she has no disabilities.

betcha she cant do it now

I have never seen an adult W sit...our muscles just are not that flexible

Yup, I gently encouraged her to sit differently and she turned out great. Age 20 now.
