My son has been on and off AD meds since he was 8 years old. One doctor (who is supposed to be the leading ADD specialist in my town) decided to put my son on Effexor and Adderall when he was 12 years old... It was a VERY bad decision. I have since learned that he never should have been prescribed the Effexor due to it being an unsafe med for a child to take. Anyway, while taking that med, the excessive sweating started. He was weaned off of that "cocktail" and started on Strattera a couple of years ago. The sweating only became worse on the Strattera.
I think that he has been on meds for so long that he thinks he won't be able to function without. His father was diagnosed with ADD when he was in middle school. He was prescribed Ritalin at the time. He and his buddies would crush and snort it so, his mother took it away and never put him on another med again. He struggled a bit through school but he has turned out fine. He has a very sucessful career and learned to control his inattentive issues without using meds.
These meds aren't natural. They all have some type of side effect and I really am beginning, at this late date, to think that they are unnecessary. The first med my son was put on was Ritalin. It actually worked wonders initially and it helped him to catch up to where he was suppoosed to be in school. After a couple of years of taking Ritalin, the positive effects wore off and trouble began. With each med we've tried since the negative effects seem to outweigh the positive...
I can agree with you abou Effexor. I was prescribed everything from Effexor to Paxil when I was your sons age. Effexor made me crazy! I have never met anyone who had a positive experience with Effexor. Docs seem to hand it out like candy. I came off the medication in high school and refused to take anything else. My parents also would not allow me to take ADD meds. BIG mistake. I went from honor student to HS drop put. I was able to control my ADD on my own for a while and I finished my Bachelors degree...it was hard. It took me twice as long to study as it did anyone else. Now that I have started my career....it has gotten out of control again. I am so thankful for Straterra...I am so worried about the long-term side effects however.
The meds are definetly not natural but if your son responds well to them. Don't take him off just yet. Maybe keep him on a small dosage.
I have just started Straterra as well. I had already experienced excessive sweating. I will actually have cold chills and be sweating profusely. It also raises my blood pressure which can cause this. My doc had me avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water. It has helped to regulate my body temp.
As far as circulation, does he experience this off the drug? I had bad circulation before but it seems worse on the pill. My feet turn purple. They had me tested for MS...came back negative. I am wondering if this pill has a bigger effect on the heart than we know. 80mg is a lot for someone that young. I am only on 25..I would probably keel over on 80!
The side effects of this drug stink but I really can't live without it!
My 16 year old is taking Strattera for the second time. The first time we took him off of it due to his suffering from circulation problems and excessive sweating.
He spent this summer strattera free and free of circulation problems. His excessive sweating was decreased but not 100% cured. He decided to go back on the med before school started again. He has been in school for a week and is only taking 25 mg per day. (He used to take 80mg per day). He came home yesterday with purple hands and feet (circulation problems)... The sweating is back to it's excessive level...
Has anyone out there experienced these side effects with Stattera?
IsaacLC38595.1991666667Maybe not, but it was hilarious. You got way lucky!I love Wierd Science, too. My husband "proposed" (if you could call it that) while we were watching it on video some time in 1996. My son sweated excessively (I mean hair dripping wet in March) - - on Concerta and he seems to sweat a good bit on Focalin (same class). It's interesting that Strattera seems to maybe do that because it's not a stimulant (I thought ours was stimulant related)My son has a issue with tempature regardless. Since he will start his thyroid med hope to see a change. We both have never had good circulation. My feet hurt all the time. You miss me as in miss me?
On Effexor, I perspired perfusely. So much so doc 'scribed hyocyamine, which stops sweating & diarhea, wh/ Efx also stimulated. Didn't quite control the sweats, but at least I woke up dry. Don't know if its registered for kids, though.
I've never heard of that one. I'll look it up. It probably isn't ok'd for pediatric use if his doctor didn't suggest it, but you never know. A dermatologist suggested Botox injections in the arm pits... It sounded a little extreme and isn't somehting I would do to myself so I couldn't justify having it done to my son...
Weird ScienceLike, I MISS what you're getting at--where your mind could possibly be going & whether or not we can reel you back in to semi-sanity. Naw, not really. Just miss the promptness of your responses on the public board.
Have fun at Kinko's--if that's possible. Well, I guess you could have a good time at an insurance seminar--so could I. (Now you know which movie that's from, don't you?)
