Currently, our 5 year old daughter is taking Strattera (for 2 months now).  We are pretty happy with the results with regards to helping her impulsivity, focus and moodiness.  It has not done much for her hyperactivity, though, and our psych has suggested adding a small dose of Tenex to calm her down a bit.

Does anyone use this for ADHD and have any input...side effects, hints, pros/cons, dosages?  Any input would be appreciated.

Suzi

Our son got tics as a side effect of stimulant medication. So the doctor
prescribed Tenex. It lowered his blood pressure so much thatwe became
concerned We stopped it right away. Perhaps it was the wrong dosage or
just the wrong medication for him. I don't know.

My son has ben on Tenex for about a year.  My son also got tics from the stimulant medication.  The Tenex has worked really well for him. It is the only medication he is on. He currently takes 1mg in am and 1mg at night and he weighs 75 lbs.He started at a dose of 1/2 mg in am then moved to 1/2 mg in am and 1/2 mg in pm for about 6 months.  It has not affected his blood pressure at all.  The only side effect we have seen is a slight increase in appetite. The Tenex has enabled him to slow down to make better decisions, think before he acts and so he has been able to make and keep  close friends, excel in school and basically turn everything around.  Last year he was demoralized from the negative feedback he constantly received from teachers and peers.  He had even wished he was dead! I couldn't imagine a bigger turn around.  Good-luck on your research, let me know if you have any other questions!

My son, 10 years old, is mildly dyslexic and mildly ADHD. He has been on Concerta since November. He did well on the 18mg and we noticed a dramatic increase in school and sports performance. In February, he was increased to 27mg and we noticed some uncontrollable frequent sniffing.  (The doctor identified this as a tic. He has never before shown signs of any type of tic.) The sniffing improved after about 2 weeks and he continued to do even better in school and in sports. The sniffing was apparent off and on; however, after a having a cold in May, my son developed frequent loud snorting and snapping.  I tried decreasing the Concerta dose to 18mg, but there was no change. His doctor suggested that he take 1 mg of Tenex at night (a beta blocker that can be used to stop tics) to control the tics along with the Concerta, but I was nervous about giving him Tenex.  Instead, I decided to take him off the Concerta completely since the school year was almost over. The snorting and snapping continued and continued (and became even more frequent) and one day a child asked him why he like to snap so much.  I finally decided to give Tenex a try.  The Tenex (we actually got the generic) made him so tired that he was lying on a chair at the swimming club and didn't want to swim; however, both the snorting and the snapping completely disappeared!  (The doctor cannot explain this sudden change because in order for Tenex to work it needs to be taken for many months.)  This summer he will be playing on a summer sports league, so I decided to try 18mg of Concerta again.  Slowly but surely, the sniffing and snapping returned.  This time (with doctor approval) I decided to try the Tenex again, only this time 1/2 tablet (an estimate because the tablet does not have a separation line).  I'll have to let everyone know what I find.  I hope the 1/2 Tenex works without the tiredness side effect, but I am wondering about the effect of using Tenex over a long period of time.  I didn't think taking Concerta would consist of taking a beta blocker to control side effects.  It would be a shame to take him off of Concerta because it has so many academic and sports benefits.  Has anyone else's child been on Tenex while on Concerta?
